What To Expect During Your First Acupuncture Treatment

What To Expect During Your First Acupuncture Treatment

Author: Thomas Ajava

Your lower back is killing you. You can’t stand it anymore. You’ve tried everything and nothing works. Your doctor has recommended acupuncture and you’ve decided to give it a try. You’re a bit nervous about trying alternative treatments, so let’s talk about what you can expect from your first acupuncture appointment.

The first thing to understand is the facility will be much like what you find in a traditional doctors office – clean and professional. You’ll be asked to fill out a health questionnaire detailing your symptoms and medical history. As is always the case, you should be honest and fill out the form completely so that the practitioner knows what they are dealing with.

The acupuncturist is then going to do something you’ve experienced in practically every visit to the doctor. They are going to exam you! That being said, the exam will be a bit different. Acupuncture is based on the manipulation of the flow of energy in your body. To understand your specific flow, the acupuncturist is going to be looking at areas where they energy manifest itself. This will include your tongue, wrists, back and legs. The fact that the acupuncturist is looking at areas where you don’t have symptoms should not be troubling!

At this point, the acupuncturist is going to make a diagnosis and suggest a treatment. The treatment will usually consist of the placement of 6 to 12 needles. These needles are sterile and always used just once. They are as thin as a hair and do not hurt when going in although you might feel a slight prick. There will be no blood to speak of. The placement of the needles will then help manipulate the flow of the energy in the body in an effort to get you back into good shape.

The next step is to hurry up and wait. You will simply sit in the position prescribed, usually on your back, and wait for the acupuncture process to play out. Most sessions last around 30 minutes, but may be much shorter or much longer depending on the particular issue being treated.

That’s it. Your session is done. One treatment can help, but it usually takes a number of successive treatments to get the job done.
