Alternative Medicine & Kirlian Photography

Alternative Medicine & Kirlian Photography by Deborah Lindholm

Kirlian photography has a well-established diagnostic purpose in the field of alternative and Eastern medicine. The images produced have a profound effect on the ability to heal. Let's take a look at what Kirlian photography is and how it can be used to heal.

What is Kirlian Photography?

In 1939 Semyon Kirlian accidentally discovered if you placed an object on a photographic plate, then connected the plate to a source of electricity there would be a radiant image that could show up, created by the electrical field around the edges of the object.

Electrography, corona discharge photography and electro photography are all different names with the same meaning as Kirlian photography. This is due to the connection made between the images and electricity. As is found in the common Kirlian experiment of the torn leaf's image being taken, the image will be the surrounding field of electricity of the full leaf, and not that of the half. The theory in this would be energy left behind from the full leaf allows the electrical current to hold the residual energy to produce the full image.

Kirlian photography is therefore the practice of capturing the energy of every living thing's 'life force' on film by way of images.

How Kirlian Photography Helps Heal

Many common eastern medicine traditions including Reiki and acupuncture are based on energy fields in the body. Kirlian photography, because it gives a practitioner the ability to visualize these energy fields, is a useful diagnosis and evaluative tool.

Acupuncturists can, for example, take an image of a person during an initial evaluation and see specifically where their energy is out of balance. It isn't a replacement for an acupuncturist's traditional diagnostic skills but rather a supplement and a way for them to demonstrate their assessment to a patient visually.

There is also a theory among scientists and practitioners that Kirlian photography can have a role in the detection of cancer or other devastating diseases. Take for example the experiment of a plant with cancer. It will show very vivid corona or electrical fields in comparison to the healthy plants. This happens as a result of the high metabolic rates found in cancerous cells.

Kirlian photography may also be an option in treating psychiatric care patients as it has the ability to show the emotional state of the person being photographed. Numerous studies conducted by Dr. Thelma moss at UCLA during the 1970s determined that states of arousal, tension and anxiety produces a red blotch appearing to be superimposed on the coronal boundary, while states of relations show themselves in a blue-white corona.

Kirlian photography, while it has skeptics, also has a strong foundation in the scientific and healing world. Professionals have used this 'accidental' discovery to help the lives of their patients around the world. It is hoped that it will become embraced by traditional western medicine for the diagnosis and treatment of major diseases like cancer. In the meantime, alternative healers are a great way to tap into this diagnostic and healing tool.
